Blood cancers — including leukemia, lymphoma, and multiple myeloma — account for a significant and growing proportion of cancer diagnoses in India. What makes them particularly dangerous is how easily their early symptoms are dismissed as fatigue, fever, or routine infections. By the time many patients reach a haematologist, the disease is already advanced. I want to change that.

The Three Main Types of Blood Cancer

Leukemia: Cancer of the blood-forming cells, causing an overproduction of abnormal white blood cells. Can be acute (rapidly progressing) or chronic (slower). Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML) and Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) are medical emergencies requiring immediate treatment.

Lymphoma: Cancer of the lymphatic system — the network of nodes and vessels that form part of the immune system. Divided into Hodgkin Lymphoma (more treatable) and Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma (a diverse group with varying outcomes).

Multiple Myeloma: Cancer of plasma cells in the bone marrow. More common in older adults and often diagnosed late due to vague symptoms.

Early Warning Signs — Do Not Ignore These

Persistent fatigue and weakness that is not explained by workload or sleep. Unexplained weight loss of more than 5% of body weight over 3–6 months. Recurrent fevers or night sweats without an obvious infection. Easy bruising or bleeding — from gums, nose, or after minor cuts. Swollen lymph nodes — painless lumps in the neck, armpit, or groin lasting more than 3 weeks. Bone pain — particularly in the back, ribs, or hips — which can indicate myeloma. Frequent infections — a sign the immune system is compromised. Pale skin or breathlessness due to anaemia from falling red cell counts.

What Should You Do?

If you or someone you know has two or more of these symptoms persisting for more than three weeks, please do not wait. A simple Complete Blood Count (CBC) — a routine blood test available everywhere — is often the first clue. If results are abnormal, a haematologist or pathologist referral is the next step.

Treatment Has Advanced Dramatically

With modern chemotherapy protocols, targeted therapies, and bone marrow transplantation, many blood cancers that were once fatal are now manageable or even curable — particularly when caught early. Early diagnosis is everything.
